In this hands-on community-mapping workshop, we’ll convene across worlds together to gather the tales of experimental platforms across India – at the intersection of hacking, making, jugaad, DIY and industry innovation – who are tackling climate emergency.
Bring along a few of your favourite examples of changemakers – from communities, spaces, businesses, tools, organisations, and approaches to individuals – who are currently working in this space in India. Together, we’ll apply core design thinking strategies – from observation, collaboration and visualisation to rapid prototyping – to identify who these changemakers are, how they all fit together, and how our worlds can combine to build capacity for change. Grassroots, ancestral, transfeminist and/or activist hatchings are especially welcome, as we’ll not only dig into projects for climate, but also the power dynamics of these systems.
We’ll deploy our findings to build an open-source actor-network map which visualises an emerging system of changemakers for climate in India, in the tradition of social scientists like Bruno Latour et al – which builds on our combined expertise to analyse key nodes in the field, and connect the dots to build regenerative eco-social futures for earthly flourishing.
This is part of the new research project Feral Hacking as Regeneration which Kit is launching with the Critical Media Lab and Studio We&Us at HGK FHNW Academy of Art & Design Basel. We are currently gathering evidence of experimental platforms which expand beyond the limits of human-oriented design for ecosocial futures, in collaboration with local communities around the world, from China and Iceland to the UK – and we’ll be inviting you to join us for the wildish adventures yet to come.
Workshop outcomes
By the end of the workshop, each participant will have:
- Experimented with core community mapping and design thinking approaches;
- Co-created an actor-network map of changemakers for climate in India;
- Joined an emerging network of hackers/makers for climate at WDCD Festival;
- Been invited to a longer-term research project on feral platforms
- Identified the avenues and connections where they can make change next.
