A thrill went through the crowd when Friday evening around 11 PM the WDCD14 publication was distributed among all those present at WDCD’s closing party. The publication The designer is a game changer consists of different booklets, including a report of the just finished event. How did they do that?

This years’ publication of WDCD, entitled The designer is a game changer, has the form of a binder filled with several booklets, partly printed in advance by WDCD-sponsor Lenoirschuring. Among these a booklet with selected writings by Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg, Carlo Ratti and Richard van der Laken and an interview with Rachel Armstrong.

The binder also contains the inaugural lecture by professor of Design, Culture and Society Timo de Rijk. This little publication was made at the venue in the pop-up studio in one of the foyers. It was then printed on an impressive digital colour press provided for by Xerox that prints, folds and binds entire booklets in a steady speed. In little time 700 copies were made, on paper provided for by Antalis.

In the meantime a team of twelve reporters swarmed the conference to report on main stage presentations, breakouts and side events. Especially on Friday they had limited time to write their reports. Meanwhile photos were made by our flying photographer Leo Veger and his colleague Titus Brein.

Around 6 PM tension raised among the editorial team and the designers. Two hours after, the 32 page report was finished and the magic Xerox-printer started again. At one end a pdf was fed to the machine, that in a minute or so spew out the first copy of the instant report at the other side. Subsequently a team of volunteer students started to assemble the different booklets in the binders.

For WDCD-attendants who didn’t go to the incredibly fantastic after party and therefore missed the publication, copies can be obtained at WDCD’s office in Amsterdam. For more information send an e-mail to info@whatdesigncando.nl.
