Landscape architects are bringing some colour and, even more importantly, some air into the concrete desert of São Paulo. Landscape studio m.90, which stands for Movimento 90°, has since 2013 been working on the Minhocão Green Corridor, the first green lane in the world consisting of vertical gardens against the blind walls of several high rises in the centre of São Paulo.
Based on the ideas of French botanist Patric Blanc who invented the Mur Végétal (plant wall), m.90 is dedicated in transforming urban landscapes with vertical gardens. The Minhocão Green Corridor in m.90’s hometown is a pilot project meant to demonstrate the aesthetic and environmental potential of the green wall covering.
The Minhocão region has more than 100 windowless façades that could hold 58.000 square meters of green area. The project aims at planting 8.000 square meters of vertical gardens, improving air quality and reducing noise pollution in the area. Instead of just covering the walls with plants, m.90 invited different artists to design coloured patterns with different kinds of plants.
