WDCD returns to São Paulo with a fantastic line-up of speakers. Among them is Aline Cavalcante, the well known advocate for the bicycle in São Paulo. She never considered to stop cycling this city dominated by cars. ‘If I stopped biking, it would be one cyclist less that uses the right to bike in the city.’
Aline Cavalcante is a journalist from the city of Aracaju, capital of the state of Sergipe in the northeast of Brazil, who made it her mission to promote the advantages of bicycling in one of the most motorized cities in the world: São Paulo. On two wheels she makes herself noticed as an advocate of the rights of cyclists, while stimulating that especially more women can take the road safely.
Because of her cyclo-activism Cavalcante became the main character in a prize winning documentary Bikes vs Cars by Swedish director Fredrik Gertten. This documentary was screened in many countries, raising everywhere the discussion in urban planning and public politics on the use of the bicycle.
Today Cavalcante is a social entrepreneur, a ‘mother-activist’, working on educational mobility projects in an organisation called oGANGORRA.

A TEIMOSA ENTUSIASTA DA BICICLETA EM SÃO PAULO
O What Design Can Do volta a São Paulo com um fantástico line-up de palestrantes. Entre eles, está Aline Cavalcante, conhecida cicloativista de São Paulo. Ela nunca considerou parar de pedalar, mesmo numa cidade dominada por carros. “Se eu parasse de pedalar, seria uma ciclista a menos a desfrutar do direito de pedalar na cidade.”
Ela é jornalista de Aracaju, capital de Sergipe, e adotou como missão promover os benefícios da bicicleta em uma das cidades mais motorizadas do mundo, São Paulo. Sobre duas rodas, ela se destacou na luta pelos direitos dos ciclistas, além de atuar para que mais mulheres ocupem as ruas com segurança.
Foi sua atividade no cicloativismo que levou Cavalcante a se tornar personagem principal do premiado documentário Bikes vs Cars, do diretor sueco Fredrik Gertten. A obra foi exibida em vários países, suscitando discussões sobre o planejamento urbano e políticas públicas para o uso da bicicleta.
Hoje, ela é empreendedora social, “mãe-ativista” e trabalha com projetos de educação e mobilidade no oGANGORRA.
