‘For us creativity doesn’t express itself through the invention of new forms, but instead through the re-formulation of existing constraints,’ says Jacob van Rijs. ‘The form explains itself in hindsight from the information it has decrypted.’
Van Rijs studied architecture at Delft University of Technology and worked for Rem Koolhaas’s Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) before founding MVRDV in 1993 his wife Nathalie de Vries and Winy Maas. The practice engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A highly collaborative, research-based design method involves clients, stakeholders and experts from a wide range of fields from early on in the creative process.
Outspoken architecture
The results are exemplary, outspoken projects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future. Iconic projects by MVRDV include the Market Hall, a combination of housing and retail in Rotterdam, the Pushed Slab, a sustainable office building in Paris’ first eco-district, the Mirador and Celosia housing in Madrid, and Crystal Houses, Chanel’s flagship store in Amsterdam built with glass bricks.
Together with Delft University of Technology, MVRDV runs The Why Factory, an independent think tank and research institute providing an agenda for architecture and urbanism by envisioning the city of the future.

O escritório se envolve em projetos globais que buscam endereçar questões arquitetônicas e urbanas contemporâneas. O método, altamente colaborativo e baseado em pesquisas, envolve clientes, stakeholers e especialistas de várias áreas desde o início do processo criativo.
