Today, Sustainability Day in the Netherlands, the selection committee gathered in Amsterdam to decide on the nominated projects of the Climate Action Challenge. The shortlist will be announced on 21 October and the projects will be exhibited at our Embassy of Climate Action during the World Design Event at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven (21-29 October).

Exciting times at WDCD as we’re heading towards the disclosure of the nominees of the Climate Action Challenge. As soon as these are made public on 21 October, the participants will have the opportunity to improve and re-submit their proposals based on the feedback of the selection committee and the entire challenge community. Anyone who has registered on the platform can comment on the projects and suggest improvements. The refined proposals must be submitted before 5 November.

International jury

Next it is up to the international jury to select the winners. The jury will convene in São Paulo prior to WDCD Live São Paulo on 22 & 23 November to establish the winners in each track (students, creative professionals, start-ups).

This gathering promises to be a special event, as the international jury consists of leading experts from the fields of climate action, design and enterprise. Among them is Patricia Espinosa, the executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, responsible for the execution of the Paris Agreement. Also on board are the Brazilian climate activists Nicole Oliveira, head of 350.org in Brazil and Ana Toni, who is chair of the board of Greenpeace International.

Designers & business executives

The designers in the jury are Fred Gelli (founder of Brazilian communications agency Tátil), Dutch architect Elma van Boxel (ZUS Architects), and Pentagram partner Naresh Ramchandani.

From the business side we have Elizabeth McKeon, IKEA Foundation’s Head of Strategy, Autodesk Foundation’s CEO Joe Speicher and Executive Dean of Parsons School of Design in New York, Joel Towers.

Hear them speak at WDCD Live

Even better, most jury members will also be on the WDCD Live São Paulo stage talking about their work. Some of them will also participate in the activation sessions’ programme. Keep track of our media as we will soon disclose the full programme.
