Thomas Rau is an architect, entrepreneur, innovator and acclaimed thought leader on sustainability and circular economy. His office RAU has been recognized for being at the forefront of producing innovative carbon neutral, energy positive and circular buildings as a norm.

Thomas was elected as Dutch Architect of the Year 2013 and awarded with the ARC13 Oeuvre Award for his widespread contribution in both promoting and realizing sustainable architecture and bringing awareness of the circular economy through international delivered lectures, TV documentaries, TED Talks and publications. He received the Circular Hero Award 2021 for his vigorous and groundbreaking work to establish a circular economy. The ULI Germany Leadership Award for Urban Innovation was awarded to him in 2022.

 

Together with his partner Sabine Oberhuber, he is the author of Material Matters, a book that outlines the fundamentals of a circular economy. A bestseller in the Netherlands and Germany, the much anticipated English version is now available.

 

RAU architects is a forerunner and market leader in the field of ‘circular architecture’. RAU designed the first circular building as a raw materials depot in the municipality of Brummen in 2013 and the first circular net energy positive building for network provider Liander in 2015. Triodos Bank’s head office, completed in 2019, is the first fully circular, remountable office building made of wood. Juf Nienke is currently the most circular, and remountable, carbon neutral housing project in Amsterdam. RAU was selected for the design and construction of the Dutch pavilion for World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.
