“Now more than ever, our creations must transcend mere necessity, embracing the imperative to serve both client aspirations and the greater good of our Earth.”

Rael is a multifaceted professional: a trained architect, activist, design technologist, multi-generational rancher, and traditional builder. His work seamlessly blends architecture, art, technology, land-based practices, and social justice. As an author, entrepreneur, and advocate, Rael is deeply involved in human rights issues at the U.S.–Mexico border. He also creates software, invents new materials and construction methods, and designs buildings as part of his applied research practice. His work often merges indigenous and traditional materials with contemporary technologies, addressing the contrasts, contradictions, and complexities of marginalized subjects, from people to materials and places in modern society.

Rael’s work is featured in the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, The Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, The London Design Museum, LACMA, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Renwick Smithsonian American Art Museum. He currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Art Practice and holds the Eval Li Memorial Chair in Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley.

“Designers wield the power to shape not just client visions, but the destiny of our planet. Now more than ever, our creations must transcend mere necessity, embracing the imperative to serve both client aspirations and the greater good of our Earth.”
