María Conejo is a visual artist and designer with a degree from the Fine Arts School of Design. Her versatile creative practice spans drawing, painting, illustration, design, large-scale murals, ceramics, and tattooing. Central to her work is the exploration of her relationship with her own body, enriched by continuous historiographical research on the human body and sexuality. A two-time recipient of Mexico’s national Jóvenes Creadores grant, she co-founded with the American writer and researcher Zoe Mendelson, the sexual education platform Pussypedia.net, serving as its art director and illustrator.
Her graphic, historical, and social research on women and their bodies led to the co-creation and artistic direction of Pussypedia.net, a free, bilingual, community sourced online encyclopedia about genital anatomy and people with pussies* sexual health. The project was recognized with first place for Socially Responsible Design at the 10th National Design Biennial In Mexico (2019) and the People’s Voice Award in the Educational Websites category at the Webby Awards (2020). This initiative evolved into Pussypedia: A Comprehensive Guide, an illustrated book published by Hachette Books in New York (2021), now available in six languages. Inspired by Pussypedia, María’s ongoing research examines the female body as a site where patriarchal and capitalist powers intersect, continuing her commitment to knowledge-sharing and artistic advocacy.
