“Design has often been shaped by a Eurocentric, urban-focused canon tied to industrial growth. It’s time to shift towards more diverse approaches, exploring design’s potential in rural contexts, serving communities living with and from nature. Let’s diversify design.”

Fernando Laposse is a Mexican designer renowned for his ability to transform humble natural materials into sophisticated design pieces. His work focuses on overlooked plant fibers native to Mexico, such as sisal, loofah, and corn leaves, which he elevates through meticulous craftsmanship. Each creation is the result of in-depth research, highlighting the material’s historical and cultural significance to a specific place and its people.

Laposse frequently collaborates with local indigenous communities, using design as a tool to address critical issues such as the environmental crisis, loss of biodiversity, and migration. Through his work, he showcases the potential of design to create meaningful change by reconnecting people with nature and preserving cultural heritage.
