The Prince Claus Fund and What Design Can Do with the support of Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs & Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of the Netherlands, present a side event to the Mondiacult conference on Culture and the Sustainable Development Goals in Mexico that centers on the perspective of engaged cultural practitioners from the Global South.

In an interactive panel discussion, we will delve into the practice of four prominent members of the creative community who shed light on what it can look like in practice when design and culture stimulate inclusive sustainable development.

PANEL PARTICIPANTS

  • Djamila Ribeiro (Brazil): writer, philosopher, and social justice activist, one of the most influential leaders of the Afro-Brazilian women’s rights movement.
  • Carla Fernandez (Mexico): fashion designer and cultural historian who preserves and revitalizes the textile heritage of Mexico’s indigenous communities today.
  • Roberto Guillen (Nicaragua): cultural manager and audiovisual producer, founder of Managua Furiosa, an initiative that develops artistic activities in Nicaragua and with the Nicaraguan diaspora.
  • Rufina Ruiz (Mexico): master craftswoman with 45 years of experience. Her philosophy points to the preservation of her identity through pottery and the sacred respect for earth transformed into clay.
  • Barbera Wolfensberger (Netherlands): general Director for Culture and Media at the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.
  • Maite Málaga Iguñiz (México) is the general coordinator of the Mexico Creativo initiative of the Mexican Ministry of Culture since 2022. She is a PhD in art history and has worked in different fields of cultural, educational, artistic and cultural promotion.

Moderated by Guillermo Osorno (Mexico), a journalist, editor and writer who currently writes for The New York Times, Milenio and Gatopardo.
