With filmmaker Safi Graauw

From solarpunk aesthetics and Afrofuturism to climate sci-fi and TikTok edits — pop culture is bursting with bold visions of the future. In this fast-paced, visual session, filmmaker, climate scientist, and pop culture curator Safi Graauw zaps us through speculative futures as seen on screen — from the hopeful to the haunting.

Expect a curated collage of fragments from film, animation, social media, comics and video clips. With each clip, Safi explores how climate and justice are imagined in pop culture: what kind of futures do they show us? What time and context shaped them? And how can they help us dream of something radically better?

Zapp Solarpunk is an inspiring and fun session for designers, makers and storytellers who want to expand their visual vocabulary of the future — and rethink what’s possible. After all, we can’t build what we can’t see.

This programme is part of the Climate Futurism theme at WDCD Live 2025.
