Design has the power to shape social narratives, making it a useful tool for those seeking to advance gender equality. However, we also have to acknowledge that design is often practised in a gender bias environment, meaning there is a risk of reproducing inequalities for women*, trans men and genderqueer people. In this session, we will engage a mix of speakers and participants from the audience through a moderated conversation exploring the relations between gender, design, and power. Through personal narratives combined with design history, we will together envision what liberation might look like and how we can use design as a tool to advocate for gender rights.
(*When we say women, that word always includes trans women.)
In this session we are going to change narratives through the art of collages and zine making. Get a global understanding of commonly used terms, navigate assumptions and biases to avoid designing to stereotypes, and share your voice by unleashing your inner artist. We will provide the necessary materials, but please bring some magazines and craft materials if you feel like it!
